Output is average for an export, after tuning it still isn't doing the watts (AM or SSB) of a newer style (Black Face) 2950DX. Maybe if Sam Lewis add's a Top Gun Compressor and Modulator to their version they can get some more life out of it. My impressions are that it may make it sound better but the radio still won't be anything special on AM. I've talked to someone else and they reported the same thing and that another party is trying to work out a NPC mod. I turned up the modulation inside and added a power microphone and it just won't swing like most other exports on AM and audio remains muffled even with a power microphone. " Cons- Radio has very little swing on AM.

However, that nagging feeling deepened when I read this objective review from (see below). I have looked at various Youtube vids and read stuff about the rig and it really sounds just what I am looking for. There are a few issues that were nagging me and they relate to the basic quality of SSB TX. This is a timely thread as I was about to buy the MAAS DX-5000 which will shortly be available in Greece. The SSB abilities of the radio seemed good to me. Am finding this radio a pleasure to use and am very happy with the results.

I am using a Zetagi BV 131 valve linear and have had a few european contacts. No problems coming back about poor audio. Like you Simon have recently bought a version of this radio and have used the AT-5555 since its arrival here on new years eve and have been using it constantly on SSB. Happy New Year Jack, good to see you on these forums.

It's slightly annoying because length of the cord is a little too short for mobile operation in my opinion. The standard microphone supplied in the box was fine for all modes although lacking in weight. So far very impressed although time will tell. On the whole a very stable radio, no significant frequency drift as the radio warmed up and a great pair of ears - sensitivity was very good and the FM side was fantastic for sensitivity pulling out lots of distant stations on the 19. The only issue I encountered was on the SSB RX was with the very strong local station (less than quarter of a mile away) causing big distortion but this was easily solved by turning the RF gain back slightly - just the same as many other radios such as the President Jackson etc. Also spoke to a couple of very local stations. Having worked the radio for 3 hours yesterday afternoon and spoke to Richard (Honeymonster) off this forum (26TM292) located over 70 miles away and working static mobile we exchanged great reports considering we were both mobile running SSB. According to Simon the Wizard the Maas version has one or two improvements over the Anytone branded version. It arrived on and is the V3 board revision. I have the Maas DX-5000 variant of this radio, supplied direct by Alex at Maas in Germany. Kaos wrote:If I bought the Maas 5000 will I be ok?
